Camlock IBC Adapters: Connecting 2" Tote Valves to Hoses and Transfer Lines

Camlock IBC Adapters: Connecting 2” Tote Valves to Hoses and Transfer Lines

IBC totes (1000 L intermediate bulk containers) are everywhere in chemical, food and oil transfer — and the standard way to get liquid out of a tote is a camlock on the valve outlet. The 2” butterfly valve on most totes is not camlock-compatible out of the box; you need the right adapter. Here is how to spec camlock IBC adapters correctly.

Aluminum type E male adapter used on IBC tote discharge connections

Type E male adapter — the tote-side half of a standard IBC hookup.

Aluminum DC dust cap protecting an open IBC coupler thread

DC dust cap on the tote valve — keeps the mating face clean between transfers.

The tote valve outlet

Most IBC totes ship with a 2” butterfly valve, and the valve outlet thread is the first thing to identify:

  • 2” BSP / buttress (S60) thread — the most common IBC valve outlet thread (buttress is the trapezoidal thread used on tote valves)
  • 2” NPT — common on North American totes and aftermarket valves
  • 2” female NPT or BSP — some valves have female outlets that accept a male adapter directly

Measure or read the valve stamp before ordering — BSP and NPT are not interchangeable, and a mismatch is a leak or a cross-threaded valve.

The adapter types

Adapter Valve side Hose side Use
2” female NPT × Type A (male camlock) threads onto the male valve outlet male camlock for a Type C/D/DC coupler The standard tote-to-hose adapter
2” male NPT/BSP × Type C (male hose shank) threads into a female valve outlet hose shank for hose clamps Female-outlet totes
IBC-specific adapters (buttress × camlock) buttress thread mating the valve camlock Direct tote connection without a valve in between
Camlock reducer / bushing sets — — Stepping 2” tote flow down to 1” or 1½” hoses

Most transfer rigs run the 2” female NPT × Type A adapter into the tote valve, then a Type C or D coupler on the hose — the standard A+C pump-to-hose layout, now seated on the tote.

Material rules by tote contents

  • Chemical totes → polypropylene is the standard: chemically inert, lightweight, no corrosion. PP camlocks and PP adapters are the chemical-industry default for acids, alkalis and solvents (check the specific chemical compatibility for gasket choice)
  • Food totes (syrup, juice, edible oil) → stainless steel with food-grade EPDM or silicone gaskets
  • Water and oil totes → aluminum works for clean water and most oils; brass for petroleum products where spark resistance matters

Gasket selection for IBC transfer

  • EPDM — water, most acids and food products
  • Viton (FKM) — aggressive solvents, fuels, high-temperature chemicals
  • NBR — oil and fuel service
  • PTFE — maximum chemical inertness on the nastiest duty

When in doubt on a chemical tote, ask for a compatibility check before the adapter goes into service — a gasket failure on a chemical line is a spill, not a drip.

Transfer layouts

  • Tote to hose (chemical): 2” female NPT × Type A adapter on the valve → Type C coupler → chemical hose → pump → destination
  • Tote to process (food): stainless adapter + food-grade gasket → 3/4” or 1” line for controlled dosing, or 2” for bulk transfer
  • Gravity flow: open the butterfly valve fully — a half-open valve restricts flow and starves the line
  • Multiple totes: manifold totes with camlock T/ball-valve manifolds for continuous feed

Handling notes

  1. Support the hose — a heavy chemical hose hanging off the tote valve stresses the adapter and the valve; support the hose run
  2. Close the butterfly valve before uncoupling — then bleed any line pressure before opening the cam arms
  3. Cap the adapter when idle — dust caps and plugs keep the thread and groove clean
  4. Check the valve gasket — tote valve gaskets fail before camlock gaskets on many rigs; inspect both
  5. No gas service — camlocks and IBC adapters are liquid-service; never pressurize a tote with gas

Checklist for an IBC adapter order

  • Valve outlet: identify 2” BSP buttress vs 2” NPT first
  • Adapter: 2” female NPT × Type A (standard), buttress × camlock (direct), or reducer set
  • Material: PP (chemical), stainless (food), aluminum/brass (water/oil)
  • Gasket: EPDM / Viton / NBR / PTFE per the contents
  • Extras: dust caps, spare gaskets, a camlock hose coupler set (C + D) to complete the rig

Tell us your tote valve thread, contents and hose size and we will confirm the adapter and coupler set.
