Camlock Material Guide: Which One for Your Fluid

Four materials cover 95% of camlock duty. The right choice is a function of the fluid, the temperature, and how much the connection is worth if it fails. Here’s the decision table first, then the reasoning.

Aluminum: The Default

Cast aluminum is the workhorse — roughly 60% of camlocks sold are aluminum. It’s a third of the price of stainless, light to handle, and rated 200 psi at 1/2”-2”.

Watch out for: alkaline fluids and salt. Aluminum corrodes in strong caustics and coastal salt air. If the coupling spends its life outdoors near the sea, go stainless.

Stainless Steel (304/316): When Failure Is Expensive

Stainless costs 2.5-4x aluminum but never rusts, handles 250 psi, and is the default for food, pharma, chemical and marine duty. 316 adds 2-3% molybdenum for chloride resistance — the extra 15-20% over 304 is worth it for saltwater.

Watch out for: price, and galvanic corrosion if you mix stainless couplings with aluminum or brass components in a wet line. Keep both halves the same material family.

Brass: Fuel and Precision Threads

Brass is machined, not cast — so threads are sharper, tolerances tighter, and it resists the spark risk of aluminum-on-steel in fuel areas. NBR-gasketed brass is the classic diesel/gasoline combination.

Watch out for: dezincification in aggressive water, and price (between aluminum and stainless).

Polypropylene: The Chemical Specialist

PP camlocks are half the weight of aluminum, immune to most acids and solvents, and the cheapest option for chemical plants and DI water systems. 150 psi at 1/2”-2”.

Watch out for: temperature — PP softens above ~70°C and derates fast. Hot chemical duty needs stainless with PTFE gaskets instead.

The Gasket Is Half the Decision

Couplings of the same material with different gaskets behave completely differently:

  • EPDM — water, weather, mild chemicals (standard fitment)
  • NBR — oil, fuel, hydraulic fluids
  • Viton (FKM) — aggressive chemicals, aromatics, high temperature
  • PTFE — strong acids, solvents, purity-critical lines

Never assume the gasket. Ask for the material by name.

FAQ

Can I connect different materials together? Physically yes, but avoid it in wet service — galvanic corrosion eats the less noble metal. Same material family on both halves is the rule.

Is aluminum food-safe? Not for direct food contact. Food duty = stainless steel with food-grade gaskets.

Which material lasts longest in seawater? 316 stainless, hands down. Aluminum pits, brass dezincifies, PP works but lacks strength for high pressure.
