Four hose couplings look interchangeable from a distance. They are not. Camlock, Storz, Bauer and tri-clamp each solve a different problem, and mixing them on one line is how leaks, pressure drops and compatibility headaches start.

Camlock: the general-purpose workhorse

Camlock (cam and groove) couplings are the most widely used quick disconnect in industry. Two cam arms on the female coupler lock over a groove on the male adapter — no tools, no threads, a few seconds to connect.

Where it wins: general transfer duties — water, fuel, chemicals, agriculture, food, marine. The type system (A-F, DC, DP) covers threaded, hose-shank, sanitary and blanking configurations, and the four common materials (aluminum, stainless, brass, polypropylene) cover everything from plain water to aggressive acids. Parts are interchangeable across manufacturers that follow A-A-59326D / EN 14420-7, so a Dixon adapter mates with a Banjo coupler.

Where it loses: fire hoses (Storz is the fire standard), ultra-clean sanitary lines (tri-clamp), and high-pressure hydraulic lines (threaded or flange fittings).

Storz: fire and water logistics

Storz couplings use interlocking lugs with a quarter-turn connection and a gasket seal. They are the fire service standard (DIN 14301-14308) and common in municipal water and irrigation pumping.

Where it wins: fire hoses, hydrant connections, water pumping and irrigation where crews connect and disconnect hoses hundreds of times a day. Both halves are identical — any Storz mates with any Storz of the same size, which simplifies stock.

Where it loses: aggressive chemicals (limited material range), high pressure beyond fire-service ratings, and non-hose connections (no threaded or welded variants in the same range).

Bauer: slurry, wastewater and pumps

Bauer couplings (DIN 14251) are threaded-collar couplings with a cam ring that locks onto the male spigot. They are built for heavy-duty suction and discharge — slurry, wastewater, pump stations and agricultural irrigation.

Where it wins: large-diameter suction/discharge lines, slurry and solids-laden water, and applications where the coupling sees rough handling. The locking collar resists accidental disconnection under vibration better than cam arms.

Where it loses: quick changes (slower than camlock), fine chemicals (fewer materials/seal options), and price point — Bauer is typically more expensive than camlock at the same size.

Tri-clamp: sanitary food and pharma

Tri-clamp (tri-clover) couplings use two ferrules joined by a band clamp with a sanitary gasket between them. They are the standard for food, dairy, beverage and pharmaceutical processing where lines must be cleaned in place (CIP) and disassembled for inspection.

Where it wins: hygienic lines that must be taken apart regularly, autoclaved or CIP’d. The smooth-bore, crevice-free design and 3-A / EHEDG compliance are non-negotiable in food and pharma.

Where it loses: speed (needs a clamp), pressure, rough outdoor duty, and price — polished stainless tri-clamp hardware is the most expensive of the four.

Decision rule

  • General transfer, stock fittings, low cost → camlock. It is the default for a reason.
  • Fire, hydrant, municipal water → Storz.
  • Slurry, wastewater, pump stations → Bauer.
  • Food, pharma, CIP lines → tri-clamp.

Compatibility warning

Camlock and Storz do not mate. Bauer and tri-clamp do not mate. Adapters exist (camlock-to-Storz, camlock-to-Bauer, camlock-to-tri-clamp) — check the thread or flange type on each side, because a camlock adapter with an NPT thread still will not connect to a BSPT pipe.
